Pretending you live somewhere else

That’s what you do when you sneak a peek at a model home or condo, whether you’re really entertaining the thought of moving—or just hoping to get a design idea or two. Either way, with any space that speaks to you, it’s harmless fun. “Oh,” you say, “My couch would go perfectly here.” Or, “Can’t you see us throwing a party in this room?!”

If you’re just looking, you may experience pangs of guilt for being disloyal to your current digs, but, don’t fret. You’re actually doing your home—or any other home—a  favor, by stretching your imagination, exploring new possibilities, or, in some cases, appreciating what you’ve already got.

Last weekend, I went to see a green development in Chicago, oh, I don’t know…to stick my toe in the soft-loft-of-my-dreams waters in an up-and-coming neighborhood. The common areas were contemporary, the combination living room-kitchen was airy, spacious and light-drenched. (I especially liked the huge island/breakfast bar, unusual pattern and color of the granite countertops and the floor-to-ceiling picture windows and know exactly which Chiasso bar stools, sofa, coffee table and lamps I would place around the room.)

The three bedrooms, including a master suite with a Jacuzzi-style tub were just right, and there was plenty of space on the two balconies to accommodate my beloved outdoor furniture. And did I mention the view from the roof deck? To. Die. For: an amazing panorama of the entire downtown skyline—plus real grass! When you add in complete energy efficiency, sustainable features like bamboo flooring, relative affordability…hey, wait a minute. I feel a huge crush coming on.

How do I break it to my house?!
