City or ‘Burbs?
Published by cindy January 24th, 2008 in inspired ideas, modern furniture, modern livingAs this is an election year, and it’s been—what?—ten minutes since you heard the results of the last one, let’s take a poll. Try to be as honest as you can with yourself. Remember, you are among friends, and there are no wrong answers. 1. How do you identify yourself—as a city person or suburbanite? 2. Are you “confused” about your identity, i.e. are you a “city person” living in the ‘burbs, or a “suburbanite” living in the city? 3. To what extent do you think your orientation affects the way you live? 4. If you lived elsewhere, what would you want more—or less—of: indoor space, outdoor space, a view, natural light, privacy, character, understatement, modernity? 5. Mentally go through every room of your home. What things define it as “city” or “suburban”? Can you tell? What would you most want to change? What’s most important to you? I bring all of this up, because I just happened to pick up a Rizzoli book called, The Way We Live in the City by Stafford Cliff and the late photographer Gilles de Chabaneix. Perusing the pages, I couldn’t help but think, “Hey, I live that way, too.” Okay, I’ve been outed: a city person living in the burbs. What would I miss if I moved back to the city tomorrow? Other than a few friends, practically nothing. But I’d first have to find a place with a patio. It’s not so much that I spend a lot of warm weather time sitting outdoors. I just like the furniture.
