Different Shades of Green
Published by cindy January 15th, 2008 in living green, modern livingIn a New Year’s resolution to reduce my carbon footprint (as well as—ahmmmm—other body parts), I’ve taken pen to paper to conduct an environmental survey of my home: what’s good, what’s so-so and what’s so heineous Ed Begley Jr. would personally come a-knockin’ at my door.
First the good. LED lightbulbs? Check. Paper, plastic, can recycling (I am an insane about this)? Check. Okay, so I wouldn’t mind the more attractive “bins” I spotted in the Chiasso catalog. I don’t know if that’s what they’re supposed to be used for, who said you have to sacrifice style in this?

I also recycle art. That’s right. Every summer, The Art Center in Highland Park, Illinois, where I live, holds a Recycled Art Sale. People donate paintings, sculptures and other objects d’art which they’re tired of, or no longer have use for and other folks come and buy it. Most people do a little of both. You’re sure to find some cool modern stuff to accessorize your home. All proceeds benefit Center classes for underprivileged women.
The so-so: cleaning products. Unfortunately Chiasso can’t help me here—although I have noticed that they recommend just wiping many of their tables and accessories with a damp cloth and, hey, every spritz counts. I do have several eco-friendlies, such as Orange Clean, Orange Glo, Simple Green, Ultra Ecos laundry detergent on hand, but I haven’t completely switched over. Note to self: try harder. There are plenty of Earth-loving brands out there.
Last but not least, a confession: there are no solar panels on my roof. Yet.
